Bat-Related Health Risks and Diseases

Bats are beneficial wildlife, but when they roost inside homes in Charlotte and Winston-Salem, they can create health concerns for homeowners.

Bat guano (droppings) can accumulate in attics and may lead to histoplasmosis, a respiratory illness caused by airborne fungal spores. While rare, bats can also carry rabies, which poses a risk if a person is bitten or scratched.

Other concerns include attic contamination, strong odors, and reduced indoor air quality due to long-term guano buildup.

Professional bat removal and exclusion is recommended to safely eliminate the infestation and prevent future health risks.

Signs You Have Bats in Your Attic

Homeowners in Charlotte and Winston-Salem often discover a bat infestation after noticing unusual activity around their home.

Common signs of bats in the attic include:

  • scratching or squeaking sounds at night
  • bats flying near rooflines at dusk
  • droppings (guano) near entry points or exterior walls
  • strong ammonia-like odors coming from the attic
  • dark staining around vents, soffits, or roof gaps

If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to schedule a professional inspection and bat exclusion service as soon as possible.

Bat Behavior in Charlotte NC

Bats usually leave their roost about ½ hour before sunset and return about ½ hour before sunrise. They fly continuously, consuming insects near areas of high insect activity – usually some source of water. Bats tend to roost near these food sources in construction gaps, attics, and upper areas of buildings.

Bat Biology in NC

Most bats hibernate over the winter in caves, hollow trees, drainage pipes, rock crevices, and heated buildings from about November to March, depending on the weather. In the spring, they return to structures during the first warm days of spring to have their babies. These are called nursery or maternity colonies. In the fall, their numbers increase. The babies are born during June–July and are breastfed until they’re able to fly (3–7 weeks). In the fall, when temperatures fall (September–November), they leave the Piedmont and fly back to their overwinter sites in the foothills or mountains of western North Carolina.
