Most bats hibernate over the winter in caves, hollow trees, drainage pipes, rock crevices and heated buildings from about November to March depending on the weather.
In the spring they return to structures during the first warm days of spring to have their babies. These are called nursery or maternity colonies. In the fall their numbers increase. The babies are born during June – July and are breast fed until they’re able to fly (3-7 weeks).
In the fall when temperatures fall (September – November) they leave the Piedmont and fly back to their overwinter sites in the foothills or mountains of western North Carolina.
Bat Behavior in Charlotte, NC
Bats usually leave their roots about ½ hour before sunset and return about ½ hour before sunrise. They fly continuously, consuming insects near areas of high insect activity – usually some source of water.
Bats tend to roost near these food sources in the construction gaps, attics and upper areas of buildings.
Bat Diseases and Why You Need Bat Removal In Charlotte
Bats are warm blooded and can contract rabies. Rabies is a disease that replicates in the salivary glands. It is 100% fatal in humans. If you suspect you are bitten by a bat call the Health Department and your physician immediately. If you have the bat keep it in tact so the brain can be tested. Consult with a professional to do this. The animal can be shipped to Raleigh for free testing. If the animal is positive you will need to contact your physician for rabies shots. All these procedures need to be performed as soon as possible; rabies incubation in people is typically from 20 to 90 days but it could be as little as 4. This varies based on the site of the bite, the severity of the wound and the amount of virus introduced. If you suspect a bite and have no animal you will need to get rabies shots; again consult your doctor immediately – you need to error on the side of caution.
