Licensed Wildlife
Technicians

PCA Wildlife has specialized in residential and commercial bat control and bat removal in the Charlotte region since 1980. Bats are federally, state, and locally protected because they are a beneficial species that feeds on insects. PCA’s licensed wildlife technicians are experts in identifying and solving bat infestation problems. Due to the potentials for rabies and respiratory diseases like histoplasmosis and the fact that it is illegal to kill bats; bat control should be left to professionals.

Common Bats in
North Carolina

The most common bats in the Charlotte region are the large brown bat, the small brown bat and the Mexican free tail bat. They range in size from 3-4 inches long with a wingspan of 9-14 inches. They weigh about 1/4 to 1/2 ounce. Their colors range from dark to chocolate brown with blackish ears.

Bat Behavior in NC

Bats usually leave their roots about ½ hour before sunset and return about ½ hour before sunrise. They fly continuously, consuming insects near areas of high insect activity – usually some source of water. Bats tend to roost near these food sources in the construction gaps, attics and upper areas of buildings.

Bat Biology in NC

Most bats hibernate over the winter in caves, hollow trees, drainage pipes, rock crevices and heated buildings from about November to March depending on the weather. In the spring they return to structures during the first warm days of spring to have their babies. These are called nursery or maternity colonies. In the fall their numbers increase. The babies are born during June – July and are breast fed until they’re able to fly (3-7 weeks). In the fall when temperatures fall (September – November) they leave the Piedmont and fly back to their overwinter sites in the foothills or mountains of western North Carolina.
