Nuisance Damage/Problems in Commercial Buildings

Pigeons are very comfortable around urban areas. They deface buildings, signs, vehicles, walkways and all the areas where they live. Commercial areas with multiple pigeon problems include: parking decks, warehouses, schools, historic buildings, hospitals, apartment complexes, skyscrapers, malls, stadiums, public buildings, airports, bus terminals, condominiums, townhomes, receiving docks – virtually any structure that affords a beam, ledge or construction surface to nest, roost or loaf on or under.

Parasitic Insects

Insects that attack pigeons as they roost will also attack other nearby food sources (humans and animals), especially when the pigeons are removed from these commercial areas. Read More about diseases that pigeons can cause These insects include mosquitoes, bird bed bugs, mites and ticks.

Diseases

Pigeons create problems in commercial areas in several ways with their waste (feces). Pigeons contaminate food, feed, water sources and transmit diseases to people, pets and domesticated animals. Some types of foodborne illnesses include bacteria which can cause food poisoning, usually diarrhea and vomiting. Their waste can also cause respiratory diseases when it falls onto soil and spores from fungus dry out and are inhaled – especially at large, older pigeon roosts where water has leached the droppings into the soil and it finally dries out. There is a less common, more virus-like organism called Ornithosis that doesn’t affect pigeons. They shed it in their feces and when it dries out and the dust is inhaled it is spread to humans. It usually causes other minor breathing problems but in rare, extreme cases can be fatal. Pigeons and other pest birds can also serve as reservoirs for other diseases that can be spread by flies from pigeon waste or mosquitoes through the pigeons’ bloodstream.

The Dangers of Pigeons
Pigeons are more than just a nuisance; they can be dangerous to both health and property. Here are some of the key dangers associated with pigeons:

Health Risks:

  • Disease Transmission: Pigeons can carry and spread diseases such as histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and psittacosis. Their droppings, in particular, can harbor harmful pathogens that become airborne.
  • Allergens: Pigeon droppings and feathers can trigger allergic reactions and respiratory issues in sensitive individuals.

Structural Damage:

  • Corrosion: Pigeon droppings are highly acidic and can corrode building materials, including metal, stone, and wood, leading to costly repairs.
  • Blockages: Nesting materials and droppings can block gutters, downspouts, and ventilation systems, causing water damage and decreased air quality.

Commercial Pigeon Removal and Exclusion

How to Get Rid of Pigeons

Pigeons can be temporarily scared away by close predators (hawks, eagles, owls, foxes, dogs, cats, etc) or human activities; but once the threat is gone, pigeons will return.

Plastic owls, balloon eyes, noises and other visual deterrents only last a short time as the birds become “used to” them and begin ignoring them.

Audio and ultrasonic can have some partial, intermittent success but they too are not a permanent solution.

Effective pigeon control requires a combination of methods tailored to the specific situation. At PCA Wildlife LLC, we employ a range of strategies to ensure comprehensive pigeon removal:

 Exclusion:
  • Netting: Installing bird netting around potential roosting and nesting areas to prevent access.
  • Spikes and Slopes: Using bird spikes and sloped surfaces to deter pigeons from landing on ledges and roofs.
Deterrents:
  • Visual and Auditory Scare Devices: Employing devices such as reflective tape, predator decoys, and ultrasonic repellents to scare pigeons away.
  • Chemical Repellents: Applying safe, non-toxic repellents to discourage pigeons from roosting and nesting.
Habitat Modification:
  • Eliminating Food Sources: Ensuring proper waste management and sealing off access to food sources.
  • Altering Roosting Sites: Modifying structures to make them less attractive for roosting and nesting.
Professional Removal:
  • Humane Trapping: Using humane traps to capture and relocate pigeons safely.
  • Regular Maintenance: Conducting regular inspections and maintenance to prevent future infestations.

Hunting pigeons in commercial environments with legal pellet guns is one way to diminish a flock and even temporarily “shock” the birds into leaving.  If the environment that brought the birds is not changed, new pigeons will reinfest, making repeated hunts necessary.  There are also considerations of employees and others’ feelings regarding the killing of the pigeons.  You will need a professional, licensed wildlife damage control expert to institute a hunting program.

Commercial Pigeon Netting / Exclusion

The only permanent solution to solving a pigeon infestation is the installation of physical barriers to take away the areas the pigeons are using to nest, roost or loaf on. You should have a professional do a thorough analysis to develop a plan encompassing pigeon removal, waste clean up/removal/decontamination and physical exclusion using a properly installed combination of bird netting, bird spikes, Bird Slide, galvanized hardware cloth (screen), galvanized flashing and other construction materials as necessary.
